Design and Technologies

Year 3 and 4 Content Descriptor
Design and Technologies Processes and Production Skills

Plan a sequence of production steps when making designed solutions individually and collaboratively (ACTDEP018)

  • determining planning processes as a class, for example recording a procedure or creating time plans

  • sequencing steps to collaboratively produce a designed solution

Design and Technologies Knowledge and Understanding

Recognise the role of people in design and technologies occupations and explore factors, including sustainability that impact on the design of products, services and environments to meet community needs (ACTDEK010)

  • considering the impact of environments on users, for example a school vegetable garden, a protected outdoor play area

This learning sequence encourages students to discover how dairy farmers can use waste products produced on their dairy farms and reduce the impact on the environment.

Students learn about how dairy cows make milk and

produce waste; and how dairy farmers reuse and recycle the waste produced by their cows.

The Dairy Discovery unit assessment task requires students to design a system to reuse and recycle cow waste and help dairy farmers reduce their impacts on the environment. This waste needs to be handled carefully so that it doesn’t pollute rivers, streams and underground water supplies, or adversely affect animals, plants and humans too!
